Best Practices when doing Wedding Photography

When I was just studying photography, or even before that, I always had a strong desire to venture into wedding and events photography. This field of photography is something I deeply love and feel passionate about. While I understand that not all photographers choose this path due to its challenges, I am drawn to the excitement and satisfaction it brings.

I have always been captivated by the art of photography, particularly the realm of wedding and event photography. From the early days of my studies, my heart has been set on the thrill and fulfillment that capturing such special moments can bring. Despite the obstacles that may come with this niche, my passion for it remains unwavering.

Photography of weddings and events is far from easy. Beyond the physical demands of carrying equipment and being on your feet for long hours, it requires a high level of creativity and quick thinking. Often, you have to be creative in a split second to capture the perfect shot.

The art of capturing moments is where anticipation becomes crucial. To succeed, you need to be two steps ahead, predicting what is going to happen and what could happen. This foresight allows you to capture those great and meaningful portraits that will be cherished forever. Being able to anticipate and seize these fleeting moments is what makes wedding and events photography so rewarding for me.

What to Prepare:

Preparation

  1. Consult with the Couple: Understand their vision, preferences, and any must-have shots.
  2. Scout the Location: Familiarize yourself with the venue to plan for the best angles and lighting.
  3. Create a Shot List: Include essential moments like the first look, ceremony, kiss, and family portraits.
  4. Pack Properly: Ensure all equipment (cameras, lenses, batteries, memory cards) is ready and packed.

Equipment

  1. Cameras: Use at least two bodies—one with a wide-angle lens and another with a zoom lens.
  2. Lenses: Essential lenses include a 24-70mm for versatility, a 70-200mm for distance shots, and 50mm or 85mm for portraits.
  3. Lighting: Carry external flashes, reflectors, and diffusers for varying lighting conditions.
  4. Accessories: Tripods, extra batteries, memory cards, and a backup camera are crucial.

Techniques

  1. Candid Shots: Capture spontaneous moments that show genuine emotions.
  2. Posed Portraits: Balance posed shots with candid ones to ensure a variety of photos.
  3. Detail Shots: Photograph the rings, flowers, decorations, and other significant details.
  4. Photojournalistic Approach: Document the day as it unfolds, telling a story through your images.

During the Wedding

  1. Be Invisible: Blend in with the guests to capture natural moments without being intrusive.
  2. Stay Alert: Be ready to capture unexpected moments that make the day unique.
  3. Communicate: Coordinate with the wedding planner and other vendors to ensure seamless coverage.
  4. Backup Shots: Take multiple shots of key moments to ensure you have the perfect image.

Post-Processing

  1. Editing Software: Use Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance and correct photos.
  2. Consistency: Maintain a consistent style throughout the wedding album.
  3. Retouching: Subtly retouch photos to enhance natural beauty without overdoing it.
  4. Backup Files: Store photos on multiple devices to prevent data loss.

Presentation

  1. Digital Albums: Create an online gallery for easy sharing with friends and family.
  2. Prints and Albums: Offer high-quality prints and custom photo albums as keepsakes.
  3. Slide Shows: Create a slideshow of highlights for the couple to share on social media.

Preserving Moments

  1. High-Quality Prints: Encourage couples to print photos using archival-quality paper and ink.
  2. Digital Storage: Advise the couple to back up digital files in multiple locations.
  3. Photo Books: Recommend professionally bound photo books for long-term preservation.
